Newsletter October 2026
Hi, this monthly newsletter is meant to give those interested a little insight in what is brewing, what is popping, and what has popped and passed.
First, I'd like to quickly catch up with how sudo nano has developed thus far. I made the first versions of the website last February, and quickly had big ambitions to publish texts and rally the community around a topic that I felt was lacking attention in the literary landscape (that topic being the digital demons that infest us and the big tech warlocks that sent them).
Despite the big ambitions, it remained a passion project that was only allowed to grow slowly in the shadowy cracks of a busy personal and professional life.
Both of us fascinated with the cyberdeck renaissance online, I joined forces with Ischa from art magazine Simulacrum to reply to an open call for workshops by BURO Stedelijk, and we got a tiny bit of budget to realise a cyberdeck workshop on the 11th of June. For some photos of the event, check this page.
The amount of registrations and enthusiasm excited us; there seemed to be a latent community interested in writing, small tech and internet culture.
Summer rolled around, professional deadlines had to be met, grass needed to be touched, and in september I moved to Groningen, preventing us to organise something in the short term to meet the interest that was shown.
In talks with Waag FutureLab and Hackers & Designers, we are now planning a six-part workshop series on designing, hacking and coding a cyberdeck, a keyboard, and a text-editor. For this, we applied to the Stimuleringsfonds for funding. Fingers crossed!
Now in Groningen with some more time on my hands due to being in between jobs, I teamed up with Marián Crespo López (from the queer-political magazine ISSUE) to start a Cyberfeminist Reading Group here. The group will have its first meeting on the 24th of november, 19:00h, in Cafe Bentomo, where we will discuss the first few chapters of Sadie Plant's foundational text on the movement: zeros+ones: Digital Women and the New Technoculture (1997). More details about the reading group can be found here.
Also to finally kick off sudo nano's publishing practice, the call for participants in a circular letter chain is now online! In this letter chain, participating writers get full creative freedom to riff off of the previous writers piece on the effect of LLM's on the future of writing, with the first piece being edited or appended to reply to the last letter. Besides publishing it online, it will be printed and distributed as a zine. Check out the call for participants here, and send it to writers you know that are into digital culture!
The website has been given a fresh coat of paint for these developments, and I'm excited to start organising the first writing meetups and workshops.
Funding, however, stays an issue. Things will go slow. If you feel like organising something in the digital-literary space, and feel like working together on it, reach out and we can go for a coffee.
Best,
Wisse
Current events:
- In Groningen, a place for makers, art and technology just opened called THEA. Situated in the former tabacco factory Niemeyer, it shares the building with an organisation responsible for bringing more AI datacenters and supercomputers to the province. There are rumours and accusations of artwashing flying around, which have some ground if THEA is not allowed or doesn't want to engage critically with her neighbour. A movement against AI is brewing in the city: naitingrunn.xyz
Reading recs:
- Corpus Britney (2026) - Dominique de Groen. A meaty novel that can be described as Speculative Fiction, Witchy Digital Horror, Postmodern Quest from an upcoming Belgian poet and artist.
- The Network Must Be Built (2025) - Maxime Garcia Diaz. For me already a classic. Both published in english and dutch, explores the fractured identity of a girl growing up between the internet and capitalism, between the Netherlands and the US.
- "Be Right Back—The Promise and Perils of AI Resurrection: Ghosts, Hauntings, and Digital Necromancy" (2025) - Adelaide Saibre. A scientific article introducting the concept of speculative automediality. What happens when AI is used to resurrect the dead? A gold mine for literary ideas.
- Exocapitalism: economies with absolutely no limits (2025) - Marek Poliks & Roberto Alonso Trillo. Trying to understand why our economy moves away from us and the earth into digital abstraction.
- "Niks nieuws. Het gebeurt nu. Een paar opmerkingen over elektronische literatuur en de geletterde cultuur van 21ste eeuw" (2009) - Arie Altena. Written by the archivist of V2_ Lab for Unstable Media in Rotterdam, a blog post nearly 20 years old but still relevant in its conclusions on the value of electronic literature - that experimental digital forms of literature do not drive the broader digitalisations in writing and reading, but that despite this, it has a value that is not to be overlooked.
- "Permacomputing" (2020) - Viznut & "Permacomputing Update 2021" (2021) - Viznut. The foundational permacomputing text from Finnish demoscene artist Ville-Matias "Viznut" Heikkilä. Great for some ideas on maintenance, care, and in general a different relationship to tech than we are brought up with. The second text is chockfull of inspiring sources for speculative fiction.
